The project will pilot and test a programme of training which will instil the latest technical and practical skills in the ground working sector, an area which is increasingly focussing on environmental and technical concerns. The project will train in-house NVQ Assessors to assess employees within their own organisation in five key trades. Fineline Carpentry will pilot this approach and seek to encourage other employers to join and repeat this approach. It will initially address these issues for the consortium members. The intention is to develop the model and extend its usage to Plymouth, Devon and South West.

The project will deliver 50 VQ level 2 and 3 qualifications to operatives and supervisors in the specialist sector in Scotland.

The project will also provide 50 appropriate HSE tests and CSCS cards, thus offering recognition of their skills and experience.

The project will target hard to reach CITB registered employers who have not previously engaged in training or assessment.

Solent Civil Engineering Collaboration - Industry Led Skills Solution Pilot

Project summary:

The project supports the establishment of an employer-led training consortium that increases the capacity of ground working provision in the South (central) area of England. 

Eleven ground-working companies have created a consortium that will centrally coordinate the delivery of Civil Engineering Operation apprentices with additional plant training at a purpose built centre to make them fully work-ready as ground-workers when they finish their course. 

The project will develop volunteers from the workforce who are near the end of their careers, into trainers and assessors to deliver this additional training and upskill the existing workforce.

After the project, an employer training consortium in the South / Central area will have increased capacity to deliver training in plant operations and ground-working through newly created trainers and assessors, as well as a training infrastructure. this will continue to deliver skills for industry in this area after the funded period. The evidence base supporting a multi-skilled workforce will help others to adopt this way of working and add to industry knowledge in this area.

The purpose of this project is to standardise, plan and implement training schemes for trainees and graduate trainees in surveying and construction to standardize and implement recruitment in conjunction with local colleges and universities.
