Project summary:

The RoofCERT programme (competence framework for the roofing sector) run by NFRC was funded by CITB for 5 years; with the original agreement ending in July 2023. The project brought together a cross-industry partnership to create and direct a unified National Workforce Development programme. It established and promoted industry wide standards for all roofing disciplines through an "Accredited Roofer" programme with the aim to act as a skills baseline for the sector.

This contract will provide the funds to allow 469 individuals who had commenced the training under the previous contract to complete their RoofCERT accreditation.

The recently published Construction Skills Network 2023 – 2027 data shows a continuing demand for bricklayers in the Homebuilding Sector. It is estimated that the industry needs 4,000 additional bricklayers per annum.

The Brickwork Masterclasses will be delivered to existing workers in the homebuilding workforce. This 90-minute upskilling programme follows the success of a recent programme which delivered short brickwork training sessions which contributed to a reduction to defects in new housebuilding.

The Roofing Masterclass programme follows the success of an existing masterclass programme which delivers short brickwork training sessions which contributes to a reduction to defects in new homebuilding. CITB are expanding this approach to include roofing.

Since 2019, CITB has invested in the delivery of bricklaying skills. CITB have funded the development of 16 short courses in specific areas of brick work (e.g. Installing Fire Barriers & Breaks, Brick Slip Systems and Sills, Copings, Cappings and Junctions) and delivered brickwork standards training to 15 colleges. As of February 2023, this upskilling programme had supported over 1500 learning interventions in further education (“FE”) programmes and to over 400 experienced bricklayers .

Project summary:

Brickwork Masterclasses, a Home Building Skills Partnership initiative delivered by NHBC in partnership with the Association of Brickwork Contractors (ABC) and funded by CITB, are designed to deliver practical skills and knowledge on the most common brickwork issues found by our inspection teams. Delivered by our highly skilled and experienced NHBC Building Inspectors, we will discuss practical guidance on improving quality and standards and how to promote awareness of good practice on site. Sessions can be delivered on or near your site provided that a suitable room is available to seat the attendees, such as a large site office or canteen.

Assessors and IQAs will be recruited and trained to provide assessment resource for the trades covered under the Structural Concrete Alliance . Consequently , the number of assessors available in the industry and assessors via IQAs will increase, this will result in an increase in qualified leaners to NVQ standard linked to the three trade represented within the Alliance.

Project summary:

Creating high quality on and off-site training courses for Bricklayers, through the launch of 16 ATO delivered short duration training courses, provided by the ABC Assessment Centre.

The training courses will be written directly by bricklaying employers to target bricklayers on a nationwide scale. The areas of skill covered by the training courses have been determined by employers because of their relevancy to Modern Methods of Construction and to address the lack of skills seen from bricklayers and trainees on their sites.

Elevating tunnelling and underground construction skills training through immersive technologies (Immersive learning)

Project summary:

The project will address challenges of sufficiently simulating or recreating the tunnelling environment for workers, to develop the behaviours and competencies required to work in such environments. It will do this by developing a range of immersive modules and assets.

Modules and resources will give stakeholders a realistic, consistent and safe environment replicating tunnelling sites and machinery. They will be embedded across a broad range of qualifications and courses associated with tunnelling, delivered to over 1,200 beneficiaries and made freely available to the sector.

After the project, a range of immersive learning teaching resources will be available such as 360 degree film, digital models. Those in tunnelling roles will have received impactful VR learning experiences and resources will be adopted by the tunnelling sector to embed into existing training and qualifications.

Project summary:

An employer-led project to increase availability of on-site assessment provision in the Finishing sector, in Scotland and North England. This employer will upskill 3 employees to become qualified assessors through working in partnership with Ayrshire Construction Training Group.

Immersive Learning for Construction – Plymouth (Immersive Learning)

Project summary:

The project will reduce learning hours and increase retention of students by developing a high-quality virtual 4-bedroom house and building site from which a range of learning can be undertaken.

Behavioural safety training modules will be developed at each stage of construction, for example: plant and equipment hazards in initial stages; Working at Height in the final stages; and electrical and fire hazards in a completed build.

Modules will map to the OCN Level 1 Health and Safety course and will be multi-purpose across disciplines. Intervention will be a blended learning solution - learned in the real world and rehearsed in the virtual world. 

In addition, the project will also support blended learning including VR for Construction Managers and Supervisors.

The project will also expand the capacity and capability of immersive learning by promoting VR in construction at careers events, as well as deliver a programme of upskilling college staff and local employers in how to adopt & embed IL.

At the end of the project, the benefits of using immersive learning for behavioural safety and hazard awareness will be played back to industry, and VR content and teaching modules will be made available to industry. Learners will have received learning in a more impactful way than traditional methods, potentially leading to better performance on site.
