Developing timber frame manufacturing competence

Project summary:

The project will provide new competency based training materials which have been prioritised due to immediate demand from industry. These training materials will be available for electronic use.

These workbooks will be used specifically to support the delivery of the new Scottish Modern Apprenticeship programmes in Timber Frame Manufacture and Design, and to increase the skills, capability and capacity of the timber frame manufacturing using modern methods of construction.

After the project, the workbooks will be available to download from the Structural Timber Association website for industry to access and use.

Development and delivery of environmental awareness training

Project summary:

The project will build expertise in senior management through the IEMA Accredited Environmental Awareness course and use this expertise to develop and deploy be-spoke short-duration courses.

The training will adopt a modular structure to target particular specialisms.  Developing modules rather than block courses allows the company to efficiently target specific job roles and remove non-essential content not relevant to the audience.

After the project the environmental awareness course will be developed and freely available upon request.  10 employers will have received the benefit of the training.

Introduction to heritage construction skills

Project summary:

The project will provide training focused on heritage construction. Thirty individuals currently following NVQ2 and 3 will benefit from this training. A third of buildings in Wales were built before 1919 and are different in both the materials used and the structure as compared to modern buildings. Existing NVQ courses provide no training on make and model of old buildings. Yet it is likely that learners will be required to work on old buildings during their career. This training will ensure the preservation of heritage.

L5 accelerated graduate programme for leadership & management in the hire sector

Project summary:

The project will pilot a Level 5 Accelerated Graduate Programme in Leadership & Management which has been developed and written specifically for the hire and rental sector.

Five modules will be contextualised: motivating people; making the financial case; customer relations; managing recruitment; effective leadership. 

The long term objective is to encourage graduates to choose a career in the hire and rental industry to negate the impact of an aging workforce and to maintain a sustainable industry.

At the end of the project, a suite of resources will have been created contextualising ILM L5 to the hire and construction sectors, and these will have been piloted with graduates from industry.

My home – assess and train 900 engineers nationwide

Project summary:

The project will design a programme to assess and to train over 900 engineers nationwide to support them in developing skills needed to be a property maintenance engineer.

After the project industry efficiency will be increased by reducing travel time and ensuring jobs are completed on a first visit basis. This will increase customer satisfaction.

The resources used to achieve this will be available for industry to use.

Online and virtual reality training

Project summary:

The project is based on Hire Association Europe’s objective to invest in new technologies and make training more readily accessible to a wider audience using innovative solutions including 360 degree video, 3D animation, Virtual and Augmented reality and Oculus Rift. 

Project delivery methods will include online, mobile, tablet and virtual reality.  Topics will cover all of the construction industries key areas.

After the project, the 12 modules will be released through HAE tool hire depots so that VR training inductions can be delivered to customers and logged on a learner management system. The 12 modules and their digital assets will also be published through HAE's 'Project pHAEton' which will create a content creation and learning platform as part of CITB's Immersive Learning commission.

Plant Hire SME Growth and Development

The project will provide training to meet the current skills shortage in plant operation by delivering business skills which will allow micro employers to grow and build capacity for the sector. A programme of training which will be delivered to senior managers and business owners. These skills include: entrepreneurship, business planning, ‘whole life cost’ buying, innovative procurement, risk assessment & control, method statements and compliance.

The project will develop training essential to the upskilling of flood industry professionals in the area of Property Level Protection (PLP) The training will support employers working in Flood Protection. Project summary:

The project will increase access to the right training for fitters/plant mechanics in the tool hire industry.

The current level 3 NVQ plant maintenance qualification, whilst relevant to our sector, concentrates on larger equipment the Service Tech training will focus specifically on small hand held tools and equipment hire. In turn this will reduce skills shortages and reduce skills gaps.

At the end of the project, the training content will be available through National Occupational Standards for 'Small plant and tool maintenance' specialist up-skilling programme.
