The skills shortage of construction needing an additional 50,300 individuals to join each year (from CSN May 24)

This intervention is supporting individuals from FE into industry to increase from the current 65% and to establish long term links between employers and colleges.

Industry loses 35% of individuals from the early pipeline of interested individuals from FE construction courses with the breakdown as below.

  • 15% doing a construction-related apprenticeship.
  • 23% working in construction.
  • 27% studying other (non-apprenticeship) construction course.

The intervention specifically targets the 23% of those going from FE direct into construction to aim to increase this number.

Key Outputs

The purpose of the Project is to help improve links between Home Builders and FE Colleges which can positively influence students to gain industry experience and contacts. An employer resource will be designed and developed to support this aim.

Key Outcome

FE colleges engage and establish working relationships with key local Home Building employers to facilitate students from FE to experience substantive, real work environment, onsite activity.

To foster long term relationships between FE and industry Employers to show FE Tutors relevant industry awareness and skills to enhance curriculum teaching in the colleges. A subsidiary outcome hopes that the relationship built with FE and Home Building employers will encourage skilled construction workers in to involve them in FE teaching.

Success Criteria

  • Research and develop a resource toolkit for Home Building employers.
  • 4 case studies will be developed to promote the development work.
  • The project, once developed expects to engage and monitor construction students from FE courses to consider a career in the homebuilding sector.
  • Initially to pilot the toolkit with 6 colleges and 12 HBF member employers.
  • Tutors experience site work to best enable them to teach current homebuilding skills in the College.
  • Skilled homebuilding employers experience the work of an FE tutor and consider working in the College.
