Plant Training Standards Review

If you would like to join a working group or want to know more please contact the Standards Team on standards.qualifications@citb.co.uk.

How does the plant standards review help the construction industry?

The Standards Team works with subject matter experts from across the industry to standardise plant training via Plant Working Groups (WG). The development of the plant training standards will help to ensure that the training required by the construction industry is delivered consistently and is assessed to an industry recognised standard.

The new standards will ensure safe, consistent, and high-quality plant operations training throughout England, Scotland, and Wales.

Currently, the development focus includes the creation of standards for the following categories:

  • Vacuum Excavators
  • Cranes and Lifting
  • Lift Trucks
  • Piling
  • Demolition plant
  • Concrete pumping
  • Tunnelling

During the initial pilot stage, a set of eight standards were developed and delivered. These standards are as follows:

  • Excavator 360, above 10 tonnes (tracked)
  • Forward tipping dumper (wheeled)
  • Rear tipping dumper/ dump truck: articulated chassis (all sizes)
  • Ride on Roller
  • Telescopic handler: all sizes excluding 360 slew
  • Industrial forklift
  • Plant and Vehicle Marshaller
  • Slinger, Signaller: all types, all duties

What do the Standards Team do?

The Standards Team supports all development and review work by carrying out the following:

  • occupational reviews
  • initial research
  • arranging meetings
  • facilitating meetings
  • collating meeting notes and actions
  • producing documents for working group members to review
  • collate feedback
  • working closely with industry experts and stakeholders to ensure the content of standards meets the needs of the construction industry

All timings and frequency of meetings are determined and agreed by WG members

Digital consultation is an effective way of industry engaging with the development and review work, this is particularly useful for people who are time limited but do want to be part of the consultation and have their say.

If WG members wish to meet face to face this can also be accommodated.

The dedication and passion of working group members enables CITB to complete the maintenance and development of training standards which supports the construction industry to have a skilled, competent and inclusive workforce now and in the future.
