Gas membrane unloading, storage and preparation - refresher

Overview

The purpose of Gas membrane unloading, storage and preparation refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the full Gas membrane unloading, storage and preparation course or subsequent refresher course, and can provide proof of attendance.

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s): 

  • operative and craft

Delegate pre-requisites

Delegates must have successfully completed Gas membrane unloading, storage and preparation.

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course Trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have: 

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate 
  • at least 2 years relevant industrial experience 
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • classroom
  • workshop

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more theoretical learning.

This standard is considered to be set at a basic level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that must cover all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria

Quality assurance

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Describe risks of stresses and strains whilst handing materials and carrying out installation work

To include:

  • body movement mechanics
  • body stressors
  • good/bad postures
  • team communication
  • potential injuries
  • cause of injuries

Describe safe manual handling techniques for: lifting, moving, pushing, pulling, carrying and placing the membrane

To include:

  • rolls of membrane – confirming size, weight and associated hazards. (transit, in storage and whilst in use)
  • box materials – Confirming size, weight and associated hazards (COSHH, transit regulations)
  • large power tools and equipment - (In lifting options in loading/offloading vehicles, when on site and in the working area. Use of other occupations, kinetic methods and use of lifting aids)
  • video in classroom of good and bad practice

Demonstrate safe manual handling techniques for: lifting, moving, pushing, pulling, carrying and placing on the roof

To include:

  • rolls of membrane – from stored locations and vehicles, in-situ locations with associated details to negotiate i.e. pipes, corners, changes in formation
  • box materials – removing product from packaging and disposal of packaging
  • large power tools and equipment
  • candidate practice with coaching – complete practical task(s)

Describe the use of equipment for lifting and moving materials

To include:
  • pump truck
  • telehandler
  • mobile cranes
  • tower cranes

List the safety and safe working practices

To include examples of but not limited to:
  • personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • interpretation of risk assessments
  • safe work practices or procedures
  • spills and clean up
  • environmental legislation
  • safety legislation

Describe techniques for safe setting out of gas membranes

To include:

  • safe places to locate materials within the structure prior to installation
  • practical demonstration in workshop
  • candidate practice with coaching

Describe what to do if the weather deteriorates whilst installing gas membranes
