Introduction to sealant application tooling techniques

The purpose of this standard is to provide the candidate with the initial knowledge and skills to develop their tooling techniques for applying sealants.

Duration

Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours.

Purpose/Scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the candidate with the initial knowledge and skills to develop their tooling techniques for applying sealants.

The scope of this standard covers:

  • safety measures and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • tools, tooling and tooling sticks
  • wetting methods/techniques
  • clean tools and disposal of waste
  • measuring tools
  • removal of debris
  • strength of bond
  • finished appearance.

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:

  • operative and craft
  • supervision.

Candidate pre-requisites

The candidate pre-requisite for this course are successful completion of the following courses:-

  • BS8000 part 16 code of practice
  • Introduction to sealant application, preparation
  • Introduction to sealant application, gunning techniques.

Instruction/Supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • achieved the NVQ Level 2 Certificate in joint sealant application
  • a verifiable CV.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may/may not be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • classroom
  • workshop.

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete a practical assessment.

Quality assurance

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

No renewal/refreshment requirements - There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard

Learning outcomes

The candidate will be able to:

  • Select and fit appropriate PPE
  • Explain safety measures and safe working environments
  • Create tooling sticks
  • Tool areas of sealant to appropriate style
  • Use the various trade tools
  • Utilise appropriate methods to clean tools/equipment correctly and dispose of waste in an environmentally safe way
  • Use measuring tools
  • Identify safety measures and appropriate PPE
  • Identify tools, including:
    • tooling sticks
    • making sticks
    • tooling blocks
    • carting (concave joint).
  • Describe wetting techniques
  • Describe the removal of debris, handling and disposal of waste
  • Identify the strength of bond of sealant to surfaces
  • Explain why the finished appearance is appropriate to the client specification
