Duration

Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours

Purpose/scope

Purpose

Will be able to provide the best advice and demonstration of product as to suitability to customers requirements for particular job to secure the hire business 

Scope

Will be able to:

• Adapt approach for a variety of hirers - professionals, semi-professionals and domestic. 
• Provide advice about equipment performance characteristics and suitability to possible hire contract: 
• Advise on specific PPE for safe use; 
• Advise on the range of consumables required by equipment and available for hire.  
• Advise on routine maintenance and what to do in the event of equipment failure 
• Provide relevant product ‘hire - use of’ documentation/leaflets 
• be aware of legislation affecting hire operations and equipment - Section 6 of the Health and Safety at Work Act (companies have broad responsibilities for the safety of the products they hire out); LOLER, PUWER. 
• Ensure equipment for hire is compliant with Health & Safety requirements e.g. PAT testing, inspections and operational testing, plant operator site cards 
• Arrange the timely delivery and collection of equipment, considering vehicle type, site accessibility and health & safety requirements; 

             across the range of powered equipment not covered in other THPAT courses  

• internal combustion engines - 2 and 4 stroke; diesel 
• electric motors - mains and battery power sources 
• selection of powered equipment which may be available for training at the venue: Material hoists; temporary conveyor belts;  powered access other than MEWPS; lifting equipment; gardening equipment (cutters, trimmers, rotavators, grass cutters, turf lifters, stump grinders); welding equipment; pipe and rebar benders; generators; air compressors; powered pumps other than submerged; mixers; compactor plates

• operative and craft 
• supervision

Candidate pre-requisites

There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard. However, a basic knowledge of hire terminology and techniques would be beneficial. 

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have: 

• a qualified trainer 
• Successfully completed training to this standard  
• At least 2 years relevant industrial experience 
• A verifiable CV 

Delivery

Delivery will be in an off the job environment. 

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation. 

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.  

The following delivery methods may/may not be used in the delivery of this standard: 

• classroom 
• practical training area 

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training. 

This standard is considered to be set at intermediate level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the candidate has achieved all of the learning outcomes.

Quality assurance

Assured 

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.  

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.  

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard - unless new equipment categories within the hire sector become available.
