Levelling and tape measurement

Overview

This standard covers the principles of levelling and setting out by tape which can be applied to all aspects of construction including earthworks, roads, buildings, foundations, piles, structural steel, structures, reinforced concrete, and houses.

Duration

12 hours

Purpose/ scope

This standard covers the principles of levelling and setting out by tape which can be applied to all aspects of construction including earthworks, roads, buildings, foundations, piles, structural steel, structures, reinforced concrete, and houses.

Scope:

  • Errors in Levelling and Taping
  • Two peg test recording and calculating errors
  • Levelling - recording
  • Level survey of primary control stations and measure reduced levels (inverted readings and a level survey of a number of stations along a strip of land)
  • Measure reduced levels
  • Installing Temporary Benchmarks (TBMs)
  • Calibration requirements and instrument checks – two peg test
  • Setting up Profile boards for level excavation and drainage
  • Calculating gradients - drainage and batter rails
  • Taping – setting out rectangles and right angles on sloping ground

Occupational Relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft
  • supervision
  • management and leadership

Learner Pre-requisites

There are no learner pre-requisites as part of this standard.

Instruction/ Supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • A train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • Successfully completed training to this standard
  • At least 2 years relevant industrial experience as a site engineer across a broad range of construction projects (civils, building etc.) and current experience / CPD in the use of modern topographical equipment
  • A verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for learners to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and learner/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable learners to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods shall be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • face to face learning environment only (Such As Classroom/Workshop etc.)
  • a blend of face to face and virtual.
  • a blend of face to face and e-learning

This standard is predominately Practical

This standard is considered to be entry level

Assessment

Informally Assessed

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the learner has achieved all learning outcomes and completed all practical assessments that measure the learning outcomes

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard is:

  • the trainer must be satisfied that the learner has achieved all learning outcomes
  • practical assessments

Assured

Quality Assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard. CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the Training Organisation can meet the requirements of the Training Standard. Approved Training Organisations will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB Quality Assurance team.

Learning Outcomes

The learner will be able to:

Additional Guidance to Support Learning Outcome

Record work correctly and to the industry standard

incorporate this learning outcome in all practical assessments

Assessment Criteria: Evidenced in learners field book/work

Incorporate robust checks to all levelling

incorporate this learning outcome in all practical assessments

Assessment Criteria: Evidenced in learners field book/work

List the sources of error in levelling

Relate to the practical exercises, interactive discussion, also include instrument checks

Assessment Criteria: Course exercise – written evidence
