Impact moling

Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to fully understand the prestart requirements of moling and trenchless technologies including an understanding of potential hazards and the avoidance of risk from other underground services.

Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours

Purpose/scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to fully understand the prestart requirements of moling and trenchless technologies including an understanding of potential hazards and the avoidance of risk from other underground services.

Scope:

  • roles and responsibilities e.g. safe working practices and safety legislation
  • equipment information e.g. PPE
  • preparing machine for work
  • setting machine up for work
  • carrying out boring operations
  • maintenance of equipment

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and managers

Delegates pre-requisites

There are no delegate pre-requisites as part of this standard.

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • classroom

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more theoretical learning. This standard is set at a basic level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course practical assessment and knowledge test that must cover all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Learning outcomes

The delegate will be able to:

Identify responsibilities as an operator to ensure the safety of those working in the operational environment as well as themselves.

The individual must be able to demonstrate:

  • the relevant H&S considerations in order to undertake a risk assessment in relation to the working environment in which the equipment is situated.
  • the dangers of operating the equipment within the industry (gas, power, telecommunication, water and/or waste/resource management).

Identify PPE appropriate for machine and the industry environment in which they are operating

The individual must be able to demonstrate:

  • why, when and how PPE and other relevant health and safety control equipment should be used.
  • correctly identify the principle components
  • organisation procedures, current regulations and manufacturer information governing the operation of the machine to be used; including, (but not limited to) safe access and egress, safe operation and shutdown.
  • the terminology and purpose of the principle components, the basic construction and limitations of the machine and the procedures for its safe use.
  • how to safely check, attach, detach and use attachments suitable to the equipment and operation. (where functionality exists)

Conduct all pre-operational checks and functional tests in accordance with organisation procedures, current regulations and manufacturer information governing the machine and its function

The individual must be able to demonstrate:

  • the procedure in relation to fault or defect reporting.
  • considerations and operational requirements relating to the working environment (for example if the public are involved) of the machine.

Prepare the machine, in line with manufacturer information and company procedure, to operate safely and effectively for the work activity. 

The individual must be able to demonstrate:

  • environmental considerations including but not limited to noise relating to the operation of the equipment.
  • the actions required during operation when hazards such as underground and overhead services are encountered.

Conduct all safety checks of the work area making sure that the area is suitable for operation and any travel routes are clear from hazards

The individual must be able to demonstrate:

  • check that the launch and reception pits are of sufficient size and have been excavated using the correct procedures.
  • prepare the machine, in line with manufacturer information and company procedure, to operate safely and effectively for the work activity. Depending on the activity, this may include preparing for excavation, extraction.
  • ensure that air supply is isolated and safe.
  • connect air lines and lubricating system to the compressor using recommended procedures.
  • start compressor and open-air line valve to ensure there is sufficient lubricant being produced.
  • turn off air supply and connect thrust boring lines and thrust borer to oiler.
  • follow safe working practices

Demonstrate carrying out boring operations

The individual must be able to demonstrate:

  • inform the customer if private land is to be worked on.
  • locate all underground apparatus within the boring site.
  • correctly position boring equipment in launch hole following the correct procedures.
  • site the boring equipment following the correct procedures.
  • launch boring equipment using the correct procedures.
  • rechecking alignment and adjust if necessary.
  • constantly check the forward movement of the boring equipment and do not continue if there are any signs of surface damage.
  • reduce the air supply to the boring equipment as it enters the reception pit.
  • turn off air supply and depressurise equipment when bore has been completed.
  • install pipe using the recommended method.
  • follow safe working procedures.

Demonstrate care and maintenance of boring equipment

The individual must be able to demonstrate:

  • dismantle, clean and lubricate all equipment.
  • report any damaged equipment that may affect future boring operations to the appropriate department.
  • restore the site to its original condition.
  • follow safe working procedures.
